"The Coop"
[An excerpt from my book Behind The Door: Profiles of a Peninsula]
This is no ordinary chicken coop. It was once the writing studio of the peninsula’s most celebrated author, Norbert Blei (1935-2013). Nestled in the woods behind his home near Europe Lake in Ellison Bay, Blei penned his novels, essays, short stories and poems at all hours, in all seasons, surrounded by a chaotic collection of 45-year's worth of the writer’s paraphernalia… I returned on a perfect evening as the heavens above tossed its blanket of jewels from east to west, and shadows of uncertainty began to emerge within the landscape. A waning moon skirted the treetops. The earth exhaled; its dewy breath hovered like a ribbon of tulle above the meadow. Throughout the night coyotes advanced and retreated—unseen—voicing their concerns over the stranger among them. Constantly on the move, they shrieked and yelped—so close I could hear them pacing as they stalked through the tall grasses and the silhouetted copse of trees.
