"23 Below"

from $40.00

[The following is and exerpt from my book Behind The Door: Portraits of a Peninsula].

At 23 below the pier is treacherous, littered with ice, and invisibly long. Standing at its base, where the breakwater desperately clutches the shore; a tunnel of stanchions repeats infinitely—like through a funhouse mirror—diminishing then disappearing as I venture into the void. The surrounding water appears as a pool of thick, undulating oil—fleeing from itself in legions. Dancing from the surface, it surrenders to an apricot sky. There are no signs of life. Even the chattering waterfowl—always so numerous here—have enough sense to take shelter. All is quiet but for the mocking of nylon brushing against itself, the syncopated rhythm of crampons gnawing at the unevenness beneath my feet, and the occasional stab at the ice with the tips of my trekking poles. A stubborn sun struggles to rise above the cauldron, its golden glimmer catching the edges of the North Pier Light’s frosted iron cladding. I pause to mentally frame a composition and decide to document the moment.
